This is face-to-face counselling for two people in a relationship. This usually means a couple, but could also be siblings, a parent and son or daughter or two friends. I do not work with people under the age of 16 years.
Why couples counselling?
You may be considering couples counselling because your relationship is in crisis and you want to preserve it or decide wether it is worth preserving. You may have decided to separate and want help to manage the separation process. You may feel generally happy with the relationship but find that there are specific areas of difficulty that you want to improve or you may feel that your relationship functions well but wish to enhance your experience of connection and intimacy.
How I work.
Couples often come to counselling confused and distressed about their patterns of relating to one another. As a Transactional Analyst I help you to understand these patterns in terms of your past experiences and the needs that you and your partner are trying to have met. We will work to find more effective ways of communicating and more emotionally satisfying ways of relating. We may work on enhancing your communication skills, developing emotional literacy or building conflict resolution skills.
During your first session I will ask you about the problems you are dealing with as well as your goals for therapy. This is an evaluation session in which I will be deciding wether and how I can help you. It is also an opportunity for you to decide wether you think that I am the right therapist for you. If you decide to continue, I will then ask to see each of you separately. During this individual session I will take your personal histories so that I can understand each individual's 'back story' and how your individual histories and personalities are relevant to the problems you are trying to solve. Couples sessions start in earnest ofter this. It is usual to meet each week for a period of time, after which you may decide to come less frequently. This will be explained and negotiated as we go forward in the therapy.
